United States vs. Ecuador
Having won their group, the U.S. now faces a dangerous rival in Ecuador. The Valencia brothers could prove too much for the Americans, as the work-horse ethic of the country they now face is similar to their own, though the South Americans have the edge in technical abilities. DeAndre Yedlin’s imbecility in their last game against Paraguay means he will have to miss this match through suspension. Other than the Mexico game, this one also promises to be very tight at both ends, as John Brooks and Geoff Cameron are proving to be an example of consistency rather than its counterpart in this tournament. However, Ecuador could have the edge that they need to go through if they can put enough crosses into the box for the U.S. to defend.
Colombia vs. Peru
Lucked out by advancing second and “choosing” a lesser rival, Colombia will set out to their match against Peru knowing it is going to be much easier than facing Ecuador. With all due respect, this is a limited Peruvian squad, and it is a testament to Ricardo Gareca’s hard work that they made it to the quarterfinals. The Peruvians will give it all that they’ve got, but it might not be enough to bring down Colombia.
Argentina vs. Venezuela
Another Cinderella story, Los Llaneros qualified to the quarterfinal stage by nearly winning their group. Unfortunately, they drew Argentina, who were incredibly lucky to have Messi injured before their first match, as it forced the rest of the squad to wake up and realize that Leo can’t always win matches by himself. In an easy prediction, Argentina will advance to the semifinals.
Mexico vs. Chile
In arguably the most exciting match in this round, Los Aztecas and La Rojas will clash on Saturday. Juan Carlos Osorio’s squad is on a tear at the moment, having won 9 of their last 10 games and only conceding twice. On the other hand, Chile started its Copa campaign losing to Argentina and defeating Bolivia after a controversial refereeing decision. However, both Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal are in tip-top shape, and the team is starting to show why they are the defending champs. In the most difficult call, Chile will get to the next stage after a hard-fought game.
