There was love in the air in the worlds of football and tennis as Germany National Team skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger tied the nuptial knot with tennis superstar Ana Ivanovic.
Few days since Schweinsteiger was assaulted on social media following his blatant handball that led to a goal in Germany’s loss against Euro 2016 hosts France, Schweinsteiger will be somewhat comfortable knowing his newfound life partner hasn’t been having the best of times either in recent weeks.
Ana Ivanovic crashed out of the Wimbledon’s in the first round.
Their wedding, which took place in Venice, came after rumours suggested the two had been a ‘thing’ for at least a couple years. No pun intended.
The gossips substantiated during the month of September in 2014, when Schweini ended his relationship with long-term girlfriend Sarah Brandner.
It was Brandner who was by the side of the German midfield maestro when he led Germany to lift the world cup in Brazil two years ago, but Schweinsteiger parted ways with her a few months after reaching the milestone with the Die Mannschaft.
Then came Ana Ivanovic with her sports-woman aura and the Manchester United man was struck with love. The pair had been spotted on numerous occasions doting on each other, sending rumours flying that Bastian might go one-knee-down in a bit and propose.
He did exactly that sometime earlier this year and asked the Serbian tennis star to be his wife, which she promptly agreed. Fast-forward to the past few hours, the couple had a low-key wedding at the Venice City Hall in Italy.
Bastian and Ana had kept friends out of the loop on where and how the wedding was being organized, only informing guests to free-up their schedules for the 11th -13th of July for a robust ceremony.
The couple, who flew to Venice in a private jet from Germany, were treated like royalty in the ancient Italian city of Venice as they sealed their love with marriage.
The guest list included high profile personalities such as Joachim Löw (Germany’s head coach), Uli Hoeness (former Bayern Munich president), and Thomas Müller as well as other soccer and tennis stars.
For a wedding that binds two great sports together in one family, we wish the couple a happy married life.
